What to Bring While You’re Picking Blueberries

  • Containers: Bring shallow containers or baskets to carry your harvested blueberries. Avoid bags or deep containers so your precious blueberries won’t get crushed!
  • Clothing: Wear pants and long sleeves to protect yourself from insects and thorny bushes when blueberry picking.
  • Sun Protection: A hat and sunscreen are important for protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation offers a list of sun protection products awarded their Seal of Recommendation.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes are ideal for blueberry picking, as the terrain can be uneven.

5 Tips for Blueberry Picking at Manotak Lodge

  • Look for Ripe Berries: Ripe blueberries are deep blue or purplish blue and will be easy to pick off the bush with a gentle tug. Avoid any blueberries that have even a hint of redness because they are not fully ripened and will likely be tart.
  • Be Gentle: Blueberries are delicate, so handle them gently to avoid squishing them.
  • Storing Blueberries: After you’re done blueberry picking, store your harvested goodies in a shallow and unsealed container in a shaded spot. This keeps the blueberries fresh for longer.
  • Keep The Blueberries Fresh: Refrigerate your blueberries as soon as possible. This will keep them fresh for about two weeks. If you want to store them for longer, you can freeze them for up to a year.
  • Avoid Mold: Wait to wash your blueberries until you’re ready to eat them. Storing wet blueberries can cause them to grow mold.
