Don’t Forget These Mandatory Canada Entry Documents
Before you cross the border between the USA and Canada or arrive at a Canadian airport, make sure you have one of the following forms of ID with you:
- A valid U.S. passport – check your expiration date!
- A U.S. passport card – only valid for ground or sea travel
- An Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) — available in Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Vermont and Washington – only valid for ground travel
A NEXUS card, which speeds up processing at the border, is useful if you make frequent trips between the US and Canada. It is valid along with one of the above essential Canada entry documents that provide proof of citizenship!
Tip: Make sure whatever document you bring is valid for the entire length of your stay in Canada!
If you are traveling without your spouse or child’s other legal guardian you need a permission letter that follows these guidelines:
- You should have the non-traveling person write a permission letter stating that you have permission to travel to Canada with your child.Â
- If neither parent is traveling with the child, then both parents should be named in the permission letter.Â
- For all permission letters, include names, contact information, and dates of the trip. Getting the letter notarized is also helpful.Â
- Border agents are trained to look for human trafficking, will ask questions, and could use the letter to follow-up with a phone call before allowing entry to Canada.
Canada Border Crossing Tips
- Check Border Wait Times: Before departure, you can consult the CBSA Directory of Offices and Services for current wait times.
